With the Philadelphia - Wilmington (PA & DE) metropolitan region being home to an array of builders, remodelers, constructors and contractors all leaving their professional mark on the area’s homes, it takes a lot to stand out from the rest.
Since 2008, Andrew Viohl and the Delaware-based A. W. Viohl Contracting team have tirelessly endeavored to be the region’s premier home improvement experts who deliver both the personal touches of a small business and the “Wow!” factor of a larger company, one job at a time.
And they really do mean one job at a time.
“We’re not one of those companies pulling in $5 or $10 million a year, so we’re not rushing through your job or rushing around to get from one project to the next,” says Viohl. “Our focus is on you and your home, including finishing the job right.”
It’s all part of the family feeling that begins with a team who’s been working together for years, and is packed with experienced in-house talent who keenly understand how all parts of a house impact each other from the inside out.
“We know what we’re doing and we know how to work together,” Viohl explains. “The guys who work with me are good buddies, we’ve been working together for a long time. We’re like a family and we’re family-oriented.”
From smaller kitchen, bath and backsplash updates to total remodels, large renovations, additions, decks and screenrooms, Viohl and his team are extensively knowledgeable when it comes to tackling home projects. They also know what kind of soft skills make a contractor stand out and what it takes to earn their clients’ trust. That includes giving every homeowner their individualized, undivided attention as well as always having someone on hand who’s ready to meet unforeseen challenges head on.
“We’ve been doing this for 20some years, so we’ve seen pretty much everything,” says Viohl. “If a major issue comes up during the project, it’s no big deal for us to handle it. We don’t have to call somebody else. We’ve been using the same electrician, the same plumber for three or five years, so we know who we can trust.”
Dealing with a true one-stop shop means consistency not just across projects but also in communication, both among the team and with the client.
“We’re on the job ourselves: We don’t have subcontractors coming in and out to handle the contracting work,” he affirms. “I sell the jobs and I’m working on the jobs, too. You’re not dealing with some fast-talking sales guy who’s never swung a hammer before.”
One of the biggest pain points of the pandemic has been delays in supply chains, but Viohl says that even that frustrating reality has been slowly showing signs of finally relenting.
“It’s getting a little better,” he confirms. “On some projects we’d already started, materials that we were promised would arrive a month late. It would put a damper on things, but most people were pretty understanding. We apologized and sympathized with our customers whenever it happened and understood concerns behind delaying projects.”
Getting back to pre-pandemic timeline expectations means that homeowners who were waiting to renovate their homes can start critically assessing what they want to change about the parts of their homes they’ve been sizing up for an overhaul after staring at the same walls, colors and accents for more than a year and a half of the pandemic’s uptick in time spent at home.
And with an eye for design, Viohl and his team are more than capable of helping clients bring those long-gestating dream projects to life.
“About 90% of the time, people already have an idea in mind when they come to us to work on something like their bathrooms,” he says. “The rest of the time, we have a cabinet guy we’ll work with on getting the design right. With my experience and expertise, I oftentimes assist with the design plans.”
Boasting an entire team that brings a painstaking attention to detail and high-quality craftsmanship to every project they put their name on, A. W. Viohl Contracting has earned itself an array of loyal clients, which is the one of the best compliments a contractor can get.
“By the time a project’s over, our clients have become part of our family,” Viohl says. “It’s a badge of honor when they recommend us to their own family and friends.”
